TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY IN THIS HOT WEATHER

During extreme heat it is easy to become dehydrated or for your body to overheat. If this happens, you may develop heat cramps, heat exhaustion or even heatstroke. Hot weather can affect anyone, including the young and healthy.

During this hot weather, always remember the following:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Alcoholic beverages and sugary drinks like juice can make you more thirsty, so stay away from those as much as possible in the heat.
  • Dress appropriately: Whenever you can, try wearing loose, light-colored clothes. Avoid dark-colored clothes as they may absorb heat
  • Stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day: If you must go out in the heat, walk in the shade, make use of sunglasses and wear a light scarf
  • Have cool showers/ baths: Keep yourself cool by using wet towels, putting your feet in cool water and taking cool (not cold) showers.
  • Spend more time in air-conditioned places: Spend as much time as possible in cool or air-conditioned buildings (shopping centers, offices, Libraries, cinemas)

Older adults and children are at a higher risk for heat-related illness and should be extra cautious. Parents should ensure that children take plenty of fluids before, during, and after activity.
